The risk of cancer¹⁰ from vaping is estimated to be <0.5% of the risk from smoking. Numerous studies, conducted over 15 years and in dozens of countries, show without doubt that serious health effects from vaping are almost non-existent. Reputable e-cigarettes and vaping quality e-liquids can be said to be 95% less harmful than smoking tobacco.

In a groundbreaking new study out of New Zealand, research has revealed that the key to giving up smoking once and for all could be through switching to vaping.
In a recent study (performed in August 2020), researchers set out to understand how smokers view vaping and to test how successful making a switch to nicotine vaping would be in an effort to quit smoking for good. The study ran for four weeks.
The research team recruited 50 participants (both female and male) – from a pool of light (three to five cigarettes per day), medium (six to twenty cigarettes per day), and heavy smokers (more than twenty-one cigarettes per day).
At least 71% of the participants had tried to cut back on their consumption before the study, and 84% tried to stop smoking yet failed.
The majority of the participants (80%) had also tried using smoking cessation products such as patches, gums and sprays to help them quit, but these products also failed.
Giving Up. Understanding the Difficulties
In the first phase of the study, researchers sought to understand some of the primary reasons smokers found it hard to break their habit.
While the reasons they uncovered are not necessarily surprising, it did provide extra insight into how a nicotine vape could take the place of the typical cigarette, thus enabling participants to quit for good.
Prior to the commencement of the trial, it was understood that a vape device could address most of these issues, giving it the potential to make a real difference in the participants’ attempts to quit.
As mentioned above, for many of the research participants, this was not their first attempt at trying to quit smoking. In fact, 84% reported they had tried to quit previously and had failed.
To uncover some of the difficulties participants faced, researchers questioned them to understand why their previous attempts were unsuccessful. Many cited the worrying side effects associated with traditional stop smoking aids:
“Patches made me light-headed. Tablets gave me panic attacks. Gum gave me headaches. Plain normal peppermints worked for a while.”
However, some of the most interesting feedback coming from the study was from those who had tried vaping before as a method to quit. Many participants cited that because of the act of vaping is very similar to conventional smoking, there were added psychological and ritualistic benefits:
“It’s enough like smoking that I’m satisfied in terms of both nicotine cravings and also mentally satisfied.”
For many, vaping allowed them to partake in much of the social side of smoking, without the harmful side effects:
“I used to vape in the past. It helped me to quit because it kept me with the smoking crew, with something to do.”
These comments provided some hope to researchers as they looked to understand whether these positive associations could be replicated across the rest of the participants.
During the course of the trial, participants were introduced to a pod vape device supplied by PodVapes. Many thought that the discrete appearance would allow them to use the device without attracting too much attention. The study did not only help to uncover the health benefits of making a switch, but also enabled participants to realise the genuine financial gains that could be achieved. The majority of the participants spend anywhere between $3,500 and $13,000 on their nicotine habit yearly. This is a huge amount and one that could arguably be spent better elsewhere.
According to one participant:
“I wanted to quit because cigarettes are so bloody expensive and my wife doesn’t smoke, so we often have words about how much I spend on smoking.”
And he’s right. With the ever-increasing taxes levied on cigarettes, it’s an expensive habit to maintain. Vaping, on the other hand, is far cheaper than smoking. And the majority of the participants in the study acknowledged the financial benefits of making the switch. One pre-filled nicotine e-liquid pod that costing$10to one pack of cigarettes!.
Promising Results
Before the trial started, the average cigarettes consumed per day was 6.8. By the end of the trial, it was down to 2.4. By the end of the 30 day trial period,almost half of the participants (45%) smoked zero cigarettes. During the trial, 62% of the participants replaced smoking with vaping, and 48% stated that they would be switching to vaping even after the trial ended.
The participants also reported positive mental and physical effects after the trial. About 64% of them admitted to feeling much better mentally, while 55% stated they felt improved physical well-being.
Overall, the study clearly showed that vaping helped the participants either quit the habit or cut back on their tobacco consumption. The August 2020 study isn’t the only study on the subject of the effect of vaping on stop smoking attempts. Research coming from the UK has also shown that vaping helped smokers reduce their cigarette consumption.

]]>In an important submission to a government enquiry, a leading health researcher says vaping should be available for all smokers to improve their health and move away from cigarette smoking.
Speaking to the Health Select Committee of the New Zealand Parliament on behalf of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), Professor Chris Bullen said that as more evidence comes in, the evidence shows vaping is safer than smoking.
“Vaping is safer than smoking. I don't think there's any question about that,” Professor Bullen said.
The RACP has just announced it has changed its position on vaping and now supports vaping as a smoking cessation aid.
“For the first time smokers now have a product that can deliver nicotine. It’s not perfect and they are not safe products, but they are by all accounts, safer than smoking,” Prof Bullen explained.
He said e-cigarettes have evolved rapidly, and of those available today, pod vaping devices are the most popular, with a sealed unit that contains nicotine salt.
“They have a low power setting to deliver rather very small volumes of material that people can inhale. They are much more discreet than the old products which tended to give rise to lots of cloud.”

As the coronavirus pandemic grips the world and many countries are forced into lockdown, we are learning more about the level of damage the virus can do to the human body.
While most people who are infected with COVID-19 show mild symptoms and sometimes no symptoms at all, there is a small percentage of patients who suffer serious respiratory illness which can be fatal.
The following article details the greater risk that traditional tobacco smokers face from viruses like COVID-19 due to diminished lung function.
One research paper set out to analyse the short-term impact of active & passive e-cigarette use compared to active & passive cigarette smoking. This was assessed by measuring the serum cotinine concentration (the predominant metabolite of nicotine), exhaled carbon monoxide and assessing lung function through spirometry testing. Spirometry tests the ability to breathe out air in one forced breath and understandably, this depends on the state of the airways.
While the results showed that the serum cotinine levels were similar in the e-cigarette and cigarette smoking cohorts, there were significant differences regarding lung function and exhaled carbon monoxide.
In line with other previously reported studies, spirometry results showed that neither passive nor active e-cigarette use interfered with lung function, whereas cigarette smoking immediately caused a statistically significant decrease in lung function.
Although we know that the development of chronic lung disease happens over a long period, this study represents an important gateway into research by demonstrating that even brief exposure to cigarette smoke stimulates the processes that lead to lung damage, when compared to e-cigarettes.
A different study aimed to identify long-term changes in exhaled breath measurements and respiratory symptoms in people who either quit smoking tobacco cigarettes or reduced consumption by switching to vaping.
The findings showed that people who ceased smoking completely and used e-cigarettes instead, steadily improved both facets. Their fractional exhaled nitric oxide and exhaled carbon monoxide (eCO) began to return to normal levels, which indicates that quitting tobacco cigarettes reverses the damage caused to the lungs as a result of smoking.
Restoration of the normal lung function is extremely important to the process of fighting off respiratory pathogens such as the flu virus and the much more deadly coronavirus. This explains why people who don’t smoke tobacco cigarettes and make the transition to e-cigarettes have a lower risk of respiratory infections and other illnesses such as lung cancer.
The studies above highlight the importance of smoking cessation amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.
Many COVID-19 cases feature pneumonia, which causes inflammation in the lungs. This means that people with underlying lung conditions (which can be created or escalated by smoking) have a greater risk of developing serious illness from COVID-19.
In the worst cases, COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) – a dangerous and potentially life-threatening condition. The link between ARDS and COVID-19 was made by Chinese researchers who examined fatal cases of the coronavirus in Wuhan, China.
Over 93% of patients who died at the time of the analysis had developed ARDS. This indicates that ARDS is highly likely to contribute significantly to the death of patients.
ARDS damages the walls of air sacs (alveolus) in the lungs, which support the transfer of oxygen into red blood cells. In healthy lungs, the alveolus deliver oxygen via small blood vessels known as capillaries, which in turn send oxygen to red blood cells.
When someone gets the coronavirus, the walls and lining cells of the alveolus and capillaries are destroyed. This creates debris that lines the wall of the alveolus and causes the capillaries to leak, thus thickening the wall.
The wall thickening hinders oxygen transfer, making it difficult to breathe. This is the reason why shortness of breath has been widely documented as one of the main indicators of the oncoming severe illnesses that have ultimately led to more fatalities.
Hong Kong doctors who’ve observed patients that were discharged after being infected with COVID-19 found that their normal lung function had dropped by 20 – 30%. This means that regular activities such as walking quickly could result in shortness of breath.
To date, pulmonary fibrosis is yet to be determined. This results in lung tissue hardening so that the lungs cannot function correctly.
However, doctors do confirm that discharged patients can carry out cardiovascular exercise to gradually improve the lung function back to normal again.
The amount of damage traditional smoking causes the lungs means that smokers are less able to defend against respiratory illnesses.
The coronavirus shouldn’t be dismissed as just a normal flu or cold. Deadly conditions such as ARDS are particularly concerning. This means making the transition from smoking to vaping is all the more worthwhile.
With COVID-19 estimated to be 10 times stronger than seasonal flu, which already leads to 646,000 deaths annually, making the decision to use e-cigarettes instead of smoking can be the difference between life and death in some instances.

Find the Right Nicotine Strength
Vaping has been known to be one of the best ways to quit smoking and reduce your nicotine cravings over time.
Vaping has the unique ability to allow the user to select their concentration of nicotine they consume. Over time the user can systematically reduce the nicotine concentration of their e-liquid with the goal to wean themselves off nicotine altogether.
For heavier smokers who are switching to vaping, a higher level of nicotine is recommended. 5% nicotine salt concentrations are an excellent starting point to replicate the nicotine “buzz” and throat hit that smokers are familiar with. From there, the vaper can gradually reduce to 3% nicotine salt then 1.5% then eventually 0%. The time taken for this progression can vary from person to person and is often a reflection of the desire of the vaper to quit nicotine altogether.
If you are a light or social smoker, then selection pods with lower levels of nicotine is best. Starting with nicotine salt concentrations between 3.5% and 1.5% could be more advantageous due to the lower consumption of nicotine.
Know Your Pod Type

Professor Peter Doherty won the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering how the immune system identifies cells that have been infected by a virus. He is an Infectious Diseases specialist, and in an ABC News story, Prof Doherty has warned people to take the COVID-19 very seriously.
"Do not think that this is just another influenza. It's killing at least 10 times as many people as influenza," he said. "And it's particularly lethal for those in their 70s and 80s. It is dangerous and older people need to isolate themselves."
"If you're a smoker, do try to stop," he said.
This is a timely message in these troubling times. The good news is as soon as a smoker stops smoking, their lungs can start to heal themselves. This can reduce health complications from COVID-19, and that is important.
How quickly do lungs recover from smoking?
In a landmark study published in Nature on 29 January 2020, researchers showed that lungs can start to heal themselves almost immediately once a person stops smoking. This is great news, and whilst that study focused on lung cancer, the same conclusions apply to general lung health.
“By stopping smoking in middle age or earlier, smokers avoid most of the risk of tobacco-associated lung cancer. This benefit begins to emerge almost immediately and accrues steadily with time.”

After 12 hours
Cigarettes contain a lot of known toxins including carbon monoxide. After just 12 hours without a cigarette, the body cleanses itself of the excess carbon monoxide from the cigarettes. The carbon monoxide level returns to normal, increasing the body’s oxygen levels.
After 1 day
In as little as 1 day after quitting smoking, a person’s blood pressure begins to drop, decreasing the risk of heart disease from smoking-induced high blood pressure. In this short time, oxygen levels will have risen, making physical activity and exercise easier to do, promoting heart-healthy habits.
After 1 month
In as little as 1 month, a person’s lung function begins to improve. As the lungs heal and lung capacity improves, former smokers may notice less coughing and shortness of breath. Athletic endurance increases and former smokers may notice a renewed ability for cardiovascular activities, such as running and jumping.
After 9 months
Nine months after quitting, the lungs have significantly healed themselves. The delicate, hair-like structures inside the lungs known as cilia have recovered from the toll cigarette smoke took on them. These structures help push mucus out of the lungs and help fight infections.
Around this time, many former smokers notice a decrease in the frequency of lung infections because the healed cilia can do their job more easily.

Vaping (and Not Smoking) Can Rapidly Boost Health
A study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, looked specifically at vaping compared with tobacco smoking. Chronic smokers who switched from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarette vapes saw a significant improvement in their heart health after just one month.
The British scientists discovered that cigarette smokers who switched to nicotine-containing vapes saw a marked boost to their vascular function - a change that could lead to a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
The results within one month of switching from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarettes showed a significant improvement in endothelial function and vascular stiffness. Females benefited from switching more than males did in every between-group comparison.
Those who complied best with the e-cigarette switch demonstrated the largest improvement, rather than those who still smoked as well as vaping.
There was no difference in vascular effects between e-cigarettes with and without nicotine within the study timeframe.
Professor Jacob George of Dundee University’s cardiovascular medicine and therapeutics department said the study showed that switching from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarettes may be considered a harms reduction measure. Vaping is healthier than smoking.
“It is crucial to emphasize that e-cigarettes are not safe, just less harmful than tobacco cigarettes when it comes to vascular health,” Professor George said. “They should not be seen as harmless devices for non-smokers or young people to try.”

Most of the cells from a smoker’s airways had as many as 10,000 genetic alterations, which is considered a disaster waiting to happen by medical experts. At this stage, it doesn’t take much for them to quickly deteriorate into cancer
But there were a few cells that weren’t mutated. While there is no conclusive reasoning for why this is as yet, it is these same cells that regenerate and take the place of the compromised cells in the lungs, starting the self-curing process.

Studies have already shown that cessation of tobacco cigarettes diminished the chances of developing cancer. However, it was believed that the reason for this was because the mutations caused by smoking would stop.

France
Vaping in France is experiencing around 5-10% growth year upon year. There are now thought to be around one to two million daily vape users in France. This is following a study that confirmed many vapers were ex- smokers. As a result, vaping has been touted as a successful smoking cessation tool.
Smoking is prevalent and fashionable in France, with still around a third of the population smoking. You can’t vape and smoke in enclosed spaces, but you are free to indulge in the countless bars and eateries. Just be careful not to vape on public transport, or you may be fined up to €150.
UK
Still part of the EU in the lead-up to Brexit, the UK has seen its beloved NHS breaking at the seams due to smoking-related illness.
Programs to help smokers quit have been commonplace for years, along with high taxes on tobacco products. England has seen proof that smokers are far more able to switch to vaping than to “quit completely.”
As a result of such, several studies have been commissioned dedicated to e-cigarette safety. The conclusion of these studies is that vaping is 95% better for you than smoking.
The UK has therefore welcomed vaping with open arms however have placed a limit on the size of the e-liquid tank (2mL) and nicotine concentration (2%). You can find vape shops in city centres, and you can try vaping in bars, but you may be asked to stop. Technically where you can’t smoke, you can’t vape either. Around 5% of UK citizens vape, so you won’t be on your own.
Germany
Germany has a more relaxed and less nannying attitude towards alcohol, food, and tobacco.
